In 1983, Professor G. Christodoulou establishes the “Palaeontology and Historical Geology Laboratory” in the Physics-Mathematics Department of the University of Patras (FEK 80/1.3.1983). After Prof. Christodoulou’s retirement in 1984, the Laboratory was staffed by Professor D.Frydas (1983-2009) and Dr. St. Tsaila- Monopoli (1987-2006).

The Palaeontology and Stratigraphy Laboratory exists as an established laboratory since 1992 (Prof. D. Frydas), with the goal to "serve the educational and research needs in the fields of Micropalaeontology, Stratigraphy using Nanno-plankton and Microphase Analysis of Carbonate Rocks» (FEK 346/26.5.1992). From 1992 and until today, the Palaeontology and Stratigraphy Laboratory is part of the General -Marine Geology and Geodynamics Sector of the Department of Geology, University of Patras (FEK 346/26.5.1992).

With Prof. Fryda’s retirement in 2009 and for another two and a half years, the laboratory was left without staff, while in 2012 it was joined by a new faculty member (Dr.George Iliopoulos), acquiring new orientation and further research interests.

The Laboratory of Palaeontology and Stratigraphy is active in different respective fields and many of its members are cooperating with Greek and foreign scientists. The research of the laboratory members translates to articles published in scientific journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
